A Look Back on the Untimely Death of a Black American

October 14, 1973 - May 25, 2020

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black American man, was tragically murdered on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota by a white police officer named Derek Chauvin. Floyd's death sparked widespread protests and outrage across the United States and beyond, highlighting the ongoing issue of police brutality and racial injustice in society.

Floyd was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood and faced challenges throughout his life, including poverty and drug addiction. Despite these struggles, Floyd was known for his kind and caring nature.

On May 25, 2020, Floyd was arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill at a convenience store. During the arrest, Chauvin kneeled on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes, even as Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe. Floyd's death was ruled a homicide, and Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter charges.

The death of George Floyd became a symbol of the systemic racism and injustice faced by Black Americans in the United States. His memory continues to serve as a reminder of the need for fundamental change in policing and society.
